I hope you and your families are doing well as we begin the summer season.
Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul—a feast that reminds us of the foundation of our Catholic Church, established by Christ upon the Apostles, for the mission of proclaiming the Good News of salvation to the whole world.
On this feast day, my two terms as pastor of Nativity come to an end. I invite you to join me in giving thanks to God for all the blessings we have received as a community of faith throughout these years. Giving thanks to God in all things is at the heart of who we are. What has brought me the greatest joy is witnessing the faithful presence of so many of you at Mass. The Eucharistic Lord, Jesus Christ, nourishes and strengthens us to do all things for the glory of God.
In the next six months, I will be on sabbatical—a time of spiritual and physical renewal. Although I will be free from administrative responsibilities, I remain always a priest, and I will assist at various parishes by celebrating the sacraments. It will be a period of more intensive prayer, study, and reflection on God’s Word—a time to be renewed in mind and spirit in preparation for my next assignment, which will begin next year.
Speaking of assignments, Fr. Gregorio Hidalgo will be coming in as the new administrator. He is a man of deep faith, and with his many gifts, he will serve the Kingdom of God alongside you. Please welcome him warmly and offer him your full support.
“I, Paul, am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance.
The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.” (2 Timothy 4:6–8, 17–18)
These passionate words of my patron saint, St. Paul, from his Second Letter to Timothy, have been a source of meditation for me. They challenge and encourage me—and I hope they do the same for you—to move forward by God’s grace.
God’s grace builds on nature. The Lord Jesus continues to build His Church on the foundation of the Apostles, with St. Peter as the Rock. As Catholics, we belong to that same family—the Body of Christ.
Let us continue to celebrate our faith in hope and live it in love until the end of time.
