Mary Mother of God

Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

The Goodness of the Lord

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

After the Our Father, we Catholics say the Hail Mary as a common prayer. After the Eucharist and the sacraments, common prayers make us Catholics a family of God. We say these prayers anytime anywhere, but daily or weekly routines, personal or public, serve best to remind us of our communion with God and with one another, sinners and saints, living and dead. Our communion with God begins and ends in Jesus Christ, in whom the human and divine Son has been made manifest to humanity.

Hail Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you. (Luke 1:28)

With this greeting, the angel Gabriel announces the conception of Jesus in the womb of Mary: God enters into the world in the flesh.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Luke (1:42)

As Gabriel speaks on behalf of heaven, Elizabeth responds on behalf of earth in receiving the good news: God blesses humanity with his own presence.

In the Hail Mary, we proclaim the blessedness, not only of Mary, the first fruit of salvation in Jesus Christ, but also, in the fullness of time to come, of those who proclaim the mystery of the Incarnation in their lowliness.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

The simple, yet powerful petition the Church offers to the Blessed Virgin Mary, acknowledging her as the mother of our Lord and of the new creation, proclaims once again the communion we sinners believe in the Incarnation, the mystery of mercy and love, the mystery to be celebrated now and to be realized at the moment of our death and beyond.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed. (Luke 1:47-48)

We the faithful are never tired of singing the goodness of the Lord in and with Mary, the new Eve.
